1. Admission
to UF, FSU, other state universities may depend on where you attend high school
Students at Florida high
schools in more affluent communities are more likely to get into the state’s
top-ranked universities than students from high schools in low-income
neighborhoods. This is a problem for students that are applying to these
universities. It gets harder and harder to get into these schools each year,
students constantly worry.

Since the government has
been shut down, many government employees have been left without pay. Federal
employees who have gone about a month without a paycheck and at least three Gainesville
restaurants are stepping up to feed these employees. These restaurants are
doing whatever they can to step up and help. Midici & Francesca’s Trattoria
are offering free meals to those with a federal government ID. Taziki’s
Mediterranean Café is also offering discount meals. This issue is for all
federal workers.

A women reported being sexually assaulted at Santa Fe
College on January 14th between 7:30pm and 9:30pm. Sexual assault is
a problem on college campuses that we continue to hear about. It is unfortunate
that there was not enough security roaming around the campus at the time of
this incident to help this woman. This problem occurs for many young people and
luckily, these people are willing to step up to share their experiences to help
others become aware and know what to do in these situations.

State senator calls for plastic bag, straw ban
for businesses that sell take-out food
Many
restaurants are doing away with
using plastic bags and plastic straws. After a ban that Sen. Kevin Rader,
D-Delray Beach proposed. The proposed bans would
carry $500 fines for first-time violators and $1,000 fines for subsequent
violations. Although plastic straws comprise only about 4 percent of
plastic waste, they have been proven to be a vexing problem. This is a problem
for restaurants that use plastic items, and they must soon use replacements
instead of plastic.
